So, when I buy a new one, how do I know how new the maps in it are? Or, is
each new Tomtom allowed one free map download from the Tomtom website?

It should say on the main status screen what version software it's running.
If you buy one with Map share (720?) they tend to be very up to date anyway.

If I want one that does the UK, but can do the USA on request (by loading a
different set of maps? On an SD card or something?) I assume that's
straightforward?

(Sorry about the Dumb Questions. I know nada about sat-nav specifics.)

No idea about Tom Tom, but the COMAND built in sat navs use a CD which you
can change to suit the country you are in. On the latest ones, you can also
have the UK in detail and European main roads on one CD. The problem with
the system is the cost of the CDs - £96 each when I last looked.
